No Pain No Gain. NO.

I’m in my 40’s and grew up with war baby parents who were taught that “If it hurts it means it’s working,” and obviously the good old, “No pain. No Gain.”

I remember an incident on my Aunt’s farm in KZN, where I was accidentally bitten on the hand by the family Bullterrier. It was completely my fault. He had a penchant for not only chasing rocks but also eating them. I had been playing a game of fetch with him and I had pretended to throw the rock but still had it in my hand (a lesson to never tease) and he figured this out and went for “the rock” which he could still smell; but got my hand. It was not a serious bite but there was quite a bit of soft tissue damage and we needed to disinfect it and dress it. Hospital or doctor visits were reserved for real incidents. Poor Bullet, the Bully, had no idea why the game had abruptly ended. My older cousin who had just come back from the army was the only adult at the house. He had no idea where anything was and so grabbed a can of his shaving cream and emptied a generous amount into the open wounds. Good grief, I can still remember how much it stung and on regaling the rest of the family that evening, we were told, “Good. It hurt. It means it was working.”

In any physical therapy setting, there is a fine line between inflicting pain and efficacy and results. I have learned over time to listen to my body when rehabilitating myself and this has helped me to remember to listen to my clients. Injuries take time to heal and we are all always in a hurry to get back to “normal” and get back to our routines. 

Experience has taught me that your body knows best. Communicate with your therapist and communicate with your client. I can’t stress how important this is and how helpful it is. My own experience of injury is to focus on what I call, Monday to Monday. The minute daily frustrations get in the way, I push them aside, and say: Monday. Most injuries that I have had have been measurable in terms of weekly improvements and this has helped my headspace enormously. When training and rehabilitating, every time I have pushed too far through pain, I have realised a week or two later (when doing the same movement) that I was forcing it. Don’t. Getting the body moving after injury is always going to be uncomfortable and sometimes unpleasant but don’t be a chop. 

While my dog bite didn’t ever get infected (for which I am very grateful) the experience is still very clear in my mind today. I was 10 years old at the time. My cousin did what he could and he helped me, but there was another way.  Injury recovery is much the same and patience is key. Measure progress week on week and let go of the old adage of no pain, no gain. Set simple measurables and work from week to week. Remember to communicate with your team – a few heads are always better than one.
