It’s happening!

I have had goosebumps for the last two days. We met the HT Rally Team and were introduced to the setting up of the Bivouac yesterday. I kept looking around at the trucks, cars and overhead helicopters and reminding myself that this was actually happening around us and that we weren’t watching something on the Discovery channel. Today, was the arduous process of scrutineering, where bikes, rider gear and all paperwork is checked. The First Leg

31 December 2017 Ive been travelling for about 30 hours and I have to once again conclude that 6 foot does not travel well in economy. My hotel transfer met me as promised, for which I was terribly grateful. His name was Jose (obviously) and he was lovely. He told me to sit in the back and I knew I was in for a rough ride. Pre-Dakar

2nd January 2018 I woke up at 4am again this morning. I’m still battling the jet lag but it could always be worse. Breakfast was a delightful fish curry and it once again kept me going for most of the day. I was taxied to downtown Lima where I visited an art museum and the Cathedral Basilica of Lima, home to the conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who laid the first stone in 1535. Dakar 2018: My privilege. My pleasure.

I have always loved motorbikes, cars, 4X4 vehicles, boats – basically, anything with an engine that could move. Ever since I can remember, the Dakar Rally has been one of those events that one can only dream about. Shortly after my mom passed away last year, I went on a bike rally in the Tankwa, Karoo with a close friend.
